Good Food, Ghosts and Hideaways!

While collecting content for Portland’s Funky & Fabulous Bathrooms book, I uncover some really fascinating insights into many of our well-known and well-loved establishments, like NorthWest Public (NWPH) House on Kearney and 23rd. If you haven’t been yet, he’s a brief description to help you visualize. The house is a two-level craftsman home built in 1906. In 2011 the house opened as a gastropub / sports lounge. A Historical Look at Powell's Books

It never fails, I think to myself: I’m going to run into Powell’s to pick up this specific book and be on my way. Turns out to be exactly like saying “I’m just going to run into Target to buy shampoo” - $80 later and 3 bags full of items, other than shampoo, are in your trunk. Powell’s has a way of persuading you to stay and linger long Read more

Tweed, Yes Indeed.

The Tweed Ride seems so appealing to me. So civil and proper and whimsical. “We shall fashionable spin at leisure through our Rose City, noting the several sides of culture. Not only does this girl-on-the-go love to eat, drink and be merry, she loves the endorphin rush she gains from working out.  I have joined up with two other fellow Portland fitness fiends on a health and fitness facebook page called Drop And Give Us 20!

Our mission is this: We believe that balace in life work and play is what creates a healthy mind body and attitude. Because the mind leads and body follows and that is the difference between hoping and doing. The Drop and Give Me 20! girls are dedicated to a healthy life style through fitness, clean eating, positive thinking, and fun! Follow us as we strive for sky ~ we are ALLERGIC to mediocrity. Helping to motivate and inspire YOU beyond what you think. Follow us as we travel, learn, set even higher fitness goals, do a few races and have one hell of a good time along the way.

With our trip to Cabo planned and our daily sessions at the gym serving as a sweaty countdown to bikini beachwear; the idea hit us like a kettlebell ineptly swung overhead- we should take our Drop And Give Us 20 page international! If people bought the shake weight, surely they will listen to 3 fit  women talking fitness on the beaches of the Sea of Cortez!  So the idea was born and we ordered 300 imprinted silicone bracelets that promoted our Drop And Give Us 20 fitness page as well as my Girl On The Go PDX page.

The goal was not merely to ask hot guys to drop at our feet and do push ups while we enjoyed the view (although that was a fringe benefit and genius!) but also to promote fitness in a fun and motivational way. And it worked! We gave out bracelets to those adventuresome spirits who dropped and gave us 20! The fantastic part, aside from seeing their bewildered faces as we asked them to drop and give us 20 right there where we were standing, was how many people said they didn’t think they could push out 20 but then did- impressing both us and themselves!

Our Drop and Give Us 20 players included some of the following: the bachelor party we encountered in the lobby check-in line, the family including  their 3 year old and her grandparents, the Riu Santa Fe entertainment staff who humored us daily with multiple displays of their push-up skills, club-goers that hopped up, one after the other, on top of the bar to “earn” their orange bracelet, the unsuspecting couple celebrating a milestone birthday, the ladies who powered out 20 while wearing their dresses, the already fit dudes who challenged one of our own to 20 “drop-and-release” push ups – for which she rose to the challenge and shined, the waiters around town. We loved encountering the couple at the Cabo airport that were sporting their orange bracelets!

After 5 days, 300 bracelets, 1 black-eye that required 5 stitches from a rogue banana boat participant and not an unsuccessful Drop and Give Us 20 participant. We initiated over 6,000 push-ups, taking into account all the push-ups we did to help encourage some of our more shy players. Not bad for adding some fun fitness into a vacay!

We’d like to think, even that tiny blip in their vacation, along with our orange bracelets as reminders, will inspire people to check out our facebook page and hopefully motivate and encourage them to fit fitness into their lives. We have more bracelets in stock and will be looking for our local players to Drop and Give Us 20!  So look for the girls with the wrists adorned with, way more than ever fashionably acceptable, orange bracelets and if you see us before we get to you, we’ll drop and muscle out 20 with you!

Saturday was the 138th running of The Kentucky Derby. I was sporting a sizable hat that artfully covered up my black eye (see Cabo, You Charmer for details.)  The streets of Portland were peppered with smartly dressed couples strolling arm in arm and Dixieland Jazz Bands producing lively music that instinctively made your hands clap and a smile skim across your lips.

The prior afternoon, my friend and I scrutinized over the horse’s names and stats; we read up on their training schedules; took careful notes as to which jockeys would be riding each horse; and we also noted which races they placed in prior to coming to Churchill Downs. Translation: we looked up the horses on our iphone and choose our horses based upon which names made us laugh.

After breakfast and the primping and scrutinizing over which direction to tilt our hats, we joined a friend for our first experience with placing a bet on a horse race. We cabbed it over to the the Rialto Corner Bar and excitedly placed our bets.

The party, and there were many to choose from, we attended was at North 45. It was their 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Party and Fundraiser. The fundraising efforts supported the Bleeding Disorder Foundation of Washington.

As we entered North 45 I felt like I had just walked back in time. Ladies and gents sipping cocktails and exchanging pleasantries at the  beautiful wood bar. We sauntered our way to the back patio where it was jovial with gents dressed in seersucker and linen and the ladies donning some fabulous hats. The waitstaff and bartenders were all dressed as jockey’s, it was clever and sexy and I’ve decided to steal it for my Halloween costume next year.

A huge screen was hung high to broadcast the pre-race and race activities. Mint juleps in copper mugs loosened everyone up and set the mood for mingling, horse talk, and a willingness to buy an arms length of raffle tickets.

The race began, all eyes turned upward towards the screen and the cheering commenced.  With only 1 and a quarter miles to cover, the much anticipated event was over within 2 minutes with a roaring round of cheers and, just as loud, sighs of exasperation.

On a day when speed was holding up, the Southern California-based horse blew past a tiring Bodemeister in the deep stretch to win by 11/2 lengths. It was the third time jockey Mario Gutierrez, 25, has ridden the colt, having previously won the Robert B. Lewis and Santa Anita Derby. It was also the first time a horse has ever won from the 19 post.

Lady luck was perched on my shoulder that afternoon and much to my delight, I won! I’ll Have Another was the natural choice for me to pick and it paid off! I did some research and uncovered this sweet bit of  insight into the horse’s name. Reddam, the owner, said his wife is known for baking chocolate chip cookies, and when asked, he says, “I’ll have another.” Cute, but not what I was thinking when I choose this horse!

North 45 hosted it’s 5th Derby Party with savoir-faire and success with their fundraising efforts and a memorable time for all who participated. The event was free with food and drink prices at a very agreeable price point. A Dixieland band played after the race to continue the festivities and keep the race goers entertained. If a Derby Party is in your plans for next year, I’d place my money on North 45 as a winner.
